  กองทุนสำรองเลี้ยงชีพคือกองทุนแบบสมัครใจระหว่างนายจ้างเเละลูกจ้างกองทุนสำรองเลี้ยงชีพหรือ provident fund เป็นรูปแบบสวัสดิการที่บริษัทเอกชนหรือรัฐวิสาหกิจให้ไว้เป็นเงินออมสะสมสำหรับลูกจ้างซึ่งอยู่ภายใต้พระราชบัญญัติกองทุนสำรองเลี้ยงชีพ
   

  กองทุนสำรองเลี้ยงชีพจะมีเงินสองส่วนคือ
  - เงินสะสมเป็นเงินที่ลูกจ้างยินยอมให้นายจ่ายเข้ากองทุนทุกเดือนตามกฎหมายให้สะสมได้ 2 - 15% ของเงินเดือน
  - เงินสมทบเป็นเงินที่นายจ้างจ่ายสบทบเข้ากองทุนให้ลูกจ้างตามกฎหมายให้สมทบได้ไม่ต่ำกว่า 2 - 15% ของเงินเดือน
  
  นายจ้างจะนำเงินในกองทุนนี้ไปจัดการผ่านบริษัทหลักทรัพย์จัดการกองทุน (บลจ.) ที่เป็นผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านการลงทุนนำเงินไปบริหารต่อยอดเงินต้นให้ได้ผลงอกเงยจากตราสารหนี้ตราสารทุนหุ้นกู้หุ้นสามัญอื่นๆ เเละนำมาเฉลี่ยให้กับสมาชิกในกองทุนตามสัดส่วนเงินของแต่ละคนถืออยู่ ในทุกเดือนบริษัทจะส่งรายงานผลการจัดการกองทุนให้ลูกจ้าง
  
  เงื่อนไขที่บริษัทกำหนดไว้ในข้อบังคับกองทุนสำรองเลี้ยงชีพ
  นายจ้างส่วนใหญ่จะกำหนดสิทธิรับเงินสมทบและผลประโยชน์ของเงินสมทบที่ลูกจ้างพึงได้ตามอายุงาน เพื่อเป็นแรงจูงใจให้ลูกจ้างทำงานกับนายจ้างต่อยกตัวอย่างเช่นลูกจ้างที่มีอายุการทำงาน 1- 5 ปีได้รับเงินส่วนของนายจ้าง 50% และลูกจ้างทำงานครบ 5 ปีขึ้นไปได้ 100% เมื่อลาออก
  ถ้าลูกจ้าง A ทำงาน 2 ปีเเละต้องการลาออก ก็จะได้เงินในส่วนที่ตัวเองสะสมไว้เเละผลประโยชน์จากเงินสะสมเต็มก้อน และได้รับเงินสมทบเเละผลประโยชน์ของเงินสมทบที่เป็นส่วนของนายจ้าง 50% เป็นต้น
  
  ประโยชน์ของกองทุนสำรองเลี้ยงชีพ
  กองทุนสำรองเลี้ยงชีพเป็นหลักประกันทางการเงินให้กับลูกจ้างลูกจ้างได้ออมเงินอย่างต่อเนื่องมีเงินสมทบนอกเหนือจากเงินเดือนที่นายจ้างสมทบจ่ายให้ลูกจ้างได้รับสิทธิทางภาษีเเละยังสามารถนำไปใช้ในยามเกษียณลาออกจากงานทุพพลภาพหรือเสียชีวิต
  
  การรับเงินจากกองทุนสำรองเลี้ยงชีพ
  บริษัทที่มีกองทุนสำรองเลี้ยงชีพให้ลูกจ้างจะไม่มีการจ่ายดอกเบี้ยหรือเงินปันผลให้สมาชิกระหว่างเดือน แต่จะจ่ายเงินคืนทั้งก้อนที่เป็นเงินสะสมเเละผลประโยชน์จากเงินสะสม ให้ลูกจ้างเมื่อสิ้นสุดการเป็นสมาชิกเช่นลาออกจากงานเกษียณอายุเป็นต้นนอกจากนี้กองทุนจะไม่ให้สมาชิกถอนเงินออกบางส่วน เพราะจะเป็นการเปิดโอกาสให้สมาชิกนำเงินไปใช้ซึ่งไม่เป็นไปตามวัตถุประสงค์ของการออมเงินเพื่อไว้ใช้หลังเกษียณ
